Major depressive disorder aka clinical depression

Clinical depression is far more than the blues or just being sad.  In fact some people who suffer from depression don’t even feel sad.  They might just feel numb or irritable.  In order to know whether you suffer from depression you really need to see a doctor to get properly diagnosed.  The symptoms of depression have to have been present for at least two weeks. Furthermore, many people with depression also suffer anxiety; there are some good articles for alternatives to traditional medicine, like using ashwaghanda for anxiety

If you are suffering from depression, one of the most effective and well-studied treatments is cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as CBT.  Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques work well for depression as well as other mental health problems.  The basic way that it works is by identifying cognitive distortions, which are then overcome through the process of therapy.

CBT can be done online, in person with a psychologist, or by working through books on cognitive behavioral therapy.  Books about depression can be an excellent starting point, particularly for people suffering from mild to moderate depression.  They provide a resource for people who need information about depression and how to overcome it.  The nice thing about books is that they can be a very cost-effective way to overcome depression, both in terms of dollar value, and in terms of the time that they require.

If you suffer from depression and have had symptoms for more than two weeks, it is a good idea to see a medical health professional to get a diagnosis and to get help.  One type of therapy that is particularly effective is cognitive behavioral therapy.  This is a therapy that can be done online, in person, or via books.  Books are a surprisingly good way to deal with mental health issues.  Dealing with mental health issues by reading books is called bibliotherapy.

Do you really thinking reading a book can help one get over a mental health issue?

    • I think it depends on the person and how they learn. Some people learn very well from books whereas others learn better from other people. I also think it depends on how much effort a person puts in to the book that they are reading. For example if you were to simply read and do nothing else you might not get much out of it, but if you read with a pen and notebook nearby, taking note of new ideas and reviewing them later as well as writing down exercises and actually going through them and trying them — I think this would be very therapeutic and helpful. In fact I think this is true of any form of therapy. If you simply see a counsellor and allow their words to “wash over” you without truly participating, you will not get anything out of it, but if you are very involved and do homework that is given, then you can recover. I hope that helps. 🙂
